2019-2020 Scheduling

Pages:12

As we did last year, the APDA Board will facilitate a discussion of the entire 2019-2020 schedule at Rutgers NorthAms (1/25-1/26) rather than only the fall semester.  Please designate one representative from your school to fill out this form by 11:59 PM EST on December 20, 2018. The Board will be posting a draft of the 2019-2020 schedule shortly afterwards. We strongly encourage everyone to participate in a forum discussion on this thread related to any scheduling problems that may arise such that we can minimize the amount of time it takes to discuss it at the Rutgers NorthAms APDA meeting.

Schedule of religious holidays: 2019, 2020

APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Here is a draft of the 2019-2010 schedule, which will be updated with edits that I'll include on this post as suggestions come in that are reasonable. It would be ideal to get all discussion on the schedule done online prior to Rutgers NorthAms, such that it can be voted on quickly there. The full spreadsheet of form responses can be found here.

Some notes:

Odd dates:

  • Thanksgiving is weirdly 11/28 this year, meaning the weekend of 11/29-11/30 will be taken off, apologies for the mistake in original form listing it as 11/22-11/23.
  • President’s Day this year is 2/17, same weekend as Valentine’s Day Weekend.

Assumptions:

  • I assumed all 9/20-9/21 first choice bids understood that that’s the novice tournament weekend.
  • There could be a Central ProAms (read: NYC) added to the Fall if someone wants that.
  • There could be a Southern ProAms--but like, truly Southern--option added to the Spring if someone wants that.
  • N/A Now:
    • UVA needs to confirm they can host an unopposed 8/30-8/31 (as they did last year). I cross-referenced with their football schedule (which they cited as the largest impediment to hosting a fall tournament), and they have no home game that weekend.
    • I assumed a new norm (or at least a new tacit acceptance) of triple opposed Fall ProAms - Haverford didn’t express an explicit interest in hosting ProAms, but it’s fairly central.

Open dates [edited as updates come in]:

  • 8/30-8/31 is completely open and for the taking, as is the first weekend in January (1/3-1/4).
  • There are several Northern schools who traditionally host tournaments who did not fill out the bid form, and there are some spots on the calendar for them.
    • Schools: Amherst, Wesleyan, Williams
    • Spots: 8/30-8/31 (currently empty), 1/3-1/4 (currently empty)
  • N/A Now:
    • An American school could also oppose NorthAms if they wanted (in Canada this year, NYU opposed the last Canadian NorthAms).

Other:

  • Deviations from listed preferences were cleared by me reaching out to individual reps (ex: Northeastern on Valentine’s Day Weekend).
  • BP: USUDC is almost always the second weekend in April (likely this time 4/10-4/11). Oxford is likely the weekend of ProAms (11/8-11/9), and Cambridge is likely the weekend of 11/15-11/16 (Fordham).
    • [Edit] NAUDC will be the weekend of 10/4-10/6.

To the best of my knowledge, the Williams team is no more--I don't think they competed at a single tournament this season.

Rutgers '18 || APDA VP Finance 2017-18

Hello! Rutgers has some issues with this schedule. We will bring them up at the APDA meeting at NorthAms, but we wanted to air them out here first.

We would like to have our Spring unopposed back, and we would prefer this greatly over having two tournaments. We think that this would be good for the league for a few reasons.

First, there is typically an APDA meeting at our spring tournament. This year, we had an APDA meeting at Rutgers NorthAms instead. Next year, it appears there will be no APDA meetings before Princeton. Because very little tends to get done at APDA meetings, it seems unwise to have only two APDA meetings that Spring semester. Furthermore, the content of the early spring APDA meeting is important; we need that meeting to discuss and vote on the next year's schedule. Having an APDA meeting in Canada also seems unwise; it will become prohibitively difficult for many schools to attend that meeting because it is so far away. Asking every school in the league to have at least one person be willing to take 3 days away from school AND pay for transportation and hotels in Canada seems unfair. We believe that having a meeting at a centrally located, unopposed tournament is the best option here.

Second, we believe that centrally located, unopposed tournaments are good for the league in general. First, it facilitates hanging out with friends; friends from the North and South have few opportunities to meet up. Second, it allows the league to calibrate with itself; norms tend to become separated by geography, and in a norms-based competition, it is necessary to have a competition in which teams and judges from both parts of the league can both talk about and experience debate from both ends of the league.

Furthermore, we believe that our tournaments are opposed in a way that will hurt our draw. We rely on the revenue from an unopposed tournament to function. Rutgers University is a very big, very lean college. It doesn't provide us with much funding; the majority of our budget comes from our tournament.

We would support a couple of potential solutions.

  1. Move Tufts to April 10-11, opposing Hopkins. Move UVA to February 21-22, the ProAm weekend. Rutgers would thus have an unopposed tournament the weekend of February 6-7, at which we could host an APDA meeting. It is likely both of these schools would get a better draw this way.
  2. Move Georgetown to February 21-22, Brandeis to April 10-11, and WUSTL to Feb 28-29 (Opposing TCNJ and BU) or March 20-21 (opposing NYU and AU). Then, put Rutgers in January 31-February 1, unopposed, with an APDA meeting.

Again, we will be bringing all of this up at the APDA meeting, but just wanted to make our qualms clear so solutions can be discussed in the run-up to the NorthAms APDA meeting.

I hope all of you have a nice day!

Love,

RUDU

Response about UVA ability to host:

We are entirely unsure if we can host the 30/31. Our football schedule has not been fully published, so while there is currently no home game that weekend there is a good chance there will be.

We understand it is inconvinient for us to not know ahead of time on scheduling. As of now our only confirmed safe date is 9/28, with 9/7 and 9/21 as confirmed home games and thus not possible. As soon as we know more we will let folks know.

We would also strongly prefer not to host the August weekend.

We hope to be as accommodating as possible, thanks.

The above link troublingly seems to indicate that NAUDC would be held on the same weekend as Harvard. Perhaps it's the ardent APDA debater in me speaking, but consideration should be given to asking HWS to move rather than oppose the largest APDA tournament of the year or move that tournament off its traditional weekend.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Changes made will be always added to the above post, but are listed here as well:

  • UVA moved to 9/27-9/28 (opposing Smith)
  • Pitt moved to 11/1-11/2 (opposing Yale IV) (originally moved Pitt to oppose Brown, but they listed that weekend as only Acceptable due to their draws being on fall break and this weekend as Preferred; TCNJ had both weekends listed as Preferred)
  • TCNJ moved to 10/25-10/26 (opposing Brown)
  • Binghamton moved to 9/6-9/7 (unopposed, possible APDA Meeting); leaving GWU on 9/13-9/14 (unopposed, possible APDA Meeting)
  • UChicago moved to 1/10-1/11 (unopposed, possible APDA Meeting)
  • Tufts moved to 1/17-1/18 (opposing CMU)
  • UVA moved to 2/21-2/22 (ProAms, opposing CUNY and Yale); leaving Rutgers on 2/7-2/8 (unopposed, APDA Meeting)

See spreadsheet for updated schedule.

I have also reached out to HWS about their proposed NAUDC dates, and Justin is right about the dates (although they are not willing to move, having started bookings many things already); waiting to hear back on Harvard about potentially switching with the current Columbia/UMD weekend.

  • UMD & Columbia moved to 10/4-10/5 (opposing NAUDC)
  • Haverford moved to 9/27-9/28 (opposing UVA & Smith)
  • [Northeastern request] CUNY moved to 11/8-11/9 (unopposed, possible APDA Meeting)
  • [Northeastern request] Fall ProAms (AU, Northeastern) moved to 11/22-11/23
  • [West Point request, via Binghamton] West Point moved to 4/10-4/11 (opposing Hopkins)

Hi, Hopkins is hoping to bid for Nationals again for next year. If we do get it we won't be able to hold a tournament two weeks before that. Could we be moved to the November 8th - 9th weekend?

Changes made (over the course of the weekend of 1/12-1/13):

  • [Dartmouth request] Dartmouth placed on 11/8-11/9 (opposing CUNY) (Dartmouth requested this prior to Hopkins' post and also did not get a slot on the original calendar due to failing to fill out the form, which is why Hopkins' request to be added to 11/8-11/9 was not accommodated)
  • [Hopkins request] Hopkins moved to 2/28-2/29 (opposing BU)
    • TCNJ moved to 4/17-4/18 (opposing Wellesley, GM weekend if they are ok with that)
    • W&M moved to 4/10-4/11 (opposing West Point)
APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Hi

Apologies on behalf of Bates for responding late. If possible, could we add our tournament to the February 7th-8th slot for next year?

Thanks!

Abby

Changes made (1/14 ~11:00 am):

  • [Yale request] Yale IV & Pitt moved to 10/25-10/26
    • Fall ProAms (AU & Northeastern) moved to 11/1-11/2
    • TCNJ moved to 11/8-11/9 (opposing Dartmouth)
    • CUNY & Brown moved to 11/22-11/23
  • [Bates request] Bates added to 3/6-3/7 (opposing F&M & Stanford) (Did not accommodate original request because the weekend requested is set to be an unopposed now that Rutgers is there, but worked this date out with Bates via DM)
APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Changes made (1/15 ~3:00 pm):

  • [W&M request] W&M moved to 11/22-11/23 (opposing CUNY & Brown)
    • Rationale: No desire to host a Novice tournament, requested this date instead.

Two notes:

  • I'd strongly encourage schools to post their concerns on this thread for maximum transparency, although I appreciate that people have been reaching out to me directly.
  • This change opens up space for a Southern Novice tournament on 9/20-9/21 (opposing Swat Novice & BU Novice), which I would also strongly encourage.
APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Changes made (1/16 ~2:45 pm):

  • GW moved to 9/20-9/21 (Novice tournament, opposing Swarthmore & BU Novice tournaments)
  • W&M moved to 9/13-9/14 (unopposed, possible APDA Meeting)

Rationale: Having three novice tournaments went well this past year for all the reasons people said it would (huge draws for all of them, more novices breaking and getting speaker awards probably means better novice retention).

Hi! Brown is really concerned about our fall tournament spot (11/22), which would be really hard for us to manage.
Here are a few solutions which seem like they’d make everyone happy:
  1. Moving Columbia to 4/10 (listed as acceptable just due to preference for current date), which currently lacks a Northern option, and moving Brown to Columbia’s current weekend (10/4). (This would involve either making CUNY an unopposed or finding another replacement for the weekend- am still looking at the schedule to finagle this out)
    1.  Alternatively, a three way switch - still moving Brown the same way but moving Columbia to Wellesley’s 1st spring tournament (4/3, listed as acceptable just due to preference for current timing) and moving Wellesley to Brown’s current weekend (listed as acceptable). This means that Wellesley wouldn’t be running 2 tournaments 2 weeks apart.
  2. A three way switch*, with Tufts moving to Dartmouth’s current spot (11/8, listed as preferred by Tufts), Brown moving to Tufts’ current spot (10/18), and Dartmouth moving to Brown’s current weekend (11/22) (Dartmouth didn’t fill out the scheduling form, so unsure of their flexibility).
    1. Alternatively, still moving Tufts and Brown the same way, but then moving Dartmouth to Wellesley’s 1st spring tournament (4/3) and moving Wellesley to 11/22 (listed as acceptable). This means that Wellesley wouldn’t be running 2 tournaments 2 weeks apart.
    2. Alternatively, still moving Tufts and Brown the same way but then moving Dartmouth to either 8/30, 9/13, 1/24,  or 4/10, which lack Northern options. (These switches would all involve either making CUNY an unopposed or finding another replacement for the weekend.)
Also, given the shortage of unopposeds convenient to the North, putting this out into the universe - Brown is super willing to host an unopposed if there’s a way to make the scheduling work and really believe that we have the capacity to run a well-judged, smooth large tournament.
*For transparency, the reason why we wouldn’t just do a two way switch here is that it’s extremely hard for us to book rooms on Dartmouth’s current weekend due to a MUN conference on campus then. Our schedulers told us we need to avoid overlapping with them.

Changes made (1/17 ~11:15 am):

  • [Brown request] Brown moved to 10/18-10/19 (opposing Penn)
    • Tufts moved to 11/8-11/9 (opposing TCNJ)
    • Wellesley I moved to 11/22-11/23 (opposing CUNY)
    • Dartmouth moved to 4/3-4/4 (opposing Swarthmore) (cleared with Dartmouth via email)
    • NOTE: Of the options in Claire's post, option 1 couldn't work because of a lack of a place for CUNY I and because there is a Northern option on 4/10 (West Point), 1.1 couldn't work because Columbia indicated they really need to host a fall tournament rather than a spring one, option 2 couldn't work because Dartmouth can't host on 11/22-11/23 because of the end of the term/finals (quarter system). Option 2.2 could potentially work, but option 2.1 was neater.
APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Thank you!

Changes made (1/18 ~3:00 pm):

  • Providence College added to 9/13-9/14 (opposing W&M) (cleared with PC via DM, as they didn't fill out the form)
APDA President (2018-19) | MAL (2017-18)

Hello! Unfortunately, March 20-21 is an impossibility for NYU because that is when our spring break is held and our administration will not give us funding and rooms to host a tournament that week. Unsure how the 'first choice option' got selected, as it was also specified this weekend was our spring break in our elaboration.

However, because our administration requires a semester's worth of notice to book us rooms, grant us security permission, etc. and because our tournament must be held after our winter break that expands all of January (our tournament had to be held at TCNJ last year due to the fact our scheduled tournament was held in January), we ask that our tournament be held sometime after the first week of February, but not during the weekends of our spring break (March 13-14 and March 20-21). Due to the fact this is largely our mistake we provide the following solutions:

  1. Swapping our currently scheduled tournament (March 20-21) with William and Mary (April 10-11).
  2. Swapping our currently scheduled tournament (March 20-21) with Franklin and Marshall (March 6-7)

We are also open to discuss any other reasonable switch/alternative given!

Apologies and thanks in advance,

NYU PDU

Changes made (1/20 ~4:00 pm):

  • [NYU request] NYU moved to 2/28-2/29 (opposing Hopkins)
    • BU moved to 3/20-3/21 (opposing AU)

Apologies for missing the spring break note in the elaboration. To make thins smoother in the future, the Board would appreciate if schools could review their form submissions in full before hitting submit, as scheduling is an extraordinarily tedious task and misplaced First Choices make it even harder.
